Abstract: We will extend Iwasawa's analogy between class groups in p-cyclotomic towers and Jacobians of curves to ray class groups in cyclotomic towers and generalised Jacobians, and explain how a well-known conjecture of Leopoldt about p-adic independence of units fits into this context. This is part of a joint work with Wintenberger.
