Abstract: Modular curves are defined either as the quotient of the upper half-plane by some congruence subgroup or as a moduli space of elliptic curves with some prescribed Galois representation. They play an important role in the study of elliptic curves and in Diophantine equations. In this lecture I will explain the main motivations for the study of modular curves, describe the main results in the subject, as well as the important consequences of those results.
