The School

The School of Mathematics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, was founded in the late 1940s, and has over the years established itself as one of the leading centers for research in many branches of pure mathematics. Currently the school has faculty members conducting research in broad areas of Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Analysis, Combinatorics, Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory, Probability Theory, Representation Theory, and Topology.

The School of Mathematics provides a vibrant research atmosphere with an active graduate program, regular colloquia and research seminars, and a constant stream of academic visitors and postdoctoral researchers. Graduate students in the School of Mathematics at Mumbai as well as TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics (TIFR-CAM) at Bengaluru and CAM-ICTS joint Ph.D. program at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) at Bengaluru come under the umbrella of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, which is a Deemed University.

The School of Mathematics plays a substantial role in helping the development of mathematics in the country.  The National Centre for Mathematics (NCM) is an inter-institutional collaborative endeavor of the School of Mathematics together with the Department of Mathematics, IIT Bombay.  The NCM conducts workshops for graduate students, training programs for teachers as well as specialized research workshops with students participating from all over the country.
