THE MUMBAI MATH CIRCLE
THE MUMBAI MATH CIRCLE
TIFR in partnership with St. Xaviers College
Welcome to the Mumbai Math Circle
Mathematics is unfortunately seen by most students only as a subject to
be studied for examinations, or as a tool for solving some problems
perhaps, and even those students with an interest in Mathematics do not
have a platform to discuss interesting examples and results with experts
or other like-minded students.
With this background, we would like to start a “Maths Circle”, with an
aim to nurture and mentor students interested in Mathematical Sciences.
(This is an inspired by several successful Mathematics Clubs or Circles
like the Berkeley Math Circle or the Russian and European Math Circles.)
It is a forum to learn and discuss Mathematics without being limited for
any particular exam purpose. We hope to target bright high school and
undergraduate students with an aptitude and natural interest in
Mathematical Sciences (This may not correlate with school/board
examination performance!).
High school students, college students, undergraduate students and
Mathematics teachers (from schools or colleges)
are welcome to attend any session. All sessions are FREE. Online
registration may be required for all upcoming sessions.
We are restarting Mumbai Math Circle
Online via ZOOM. Registration will be required and details will be
posted on 1st December 2020. Registration will be free. We will resume
sessions in St Xaviers College once it is safe to do so.

We are planning to start with a short course in
Number Theory. It will be a pilot run. Depending on the response we will
continue online. The first lecture will be from 15:00 to 16:30
on December 19th, 2020.
We will have 4 Lectures in Number Theory.
It will be assumed that the participant is interested in Mathematics
and has an understanding of Class 9 and Class 10 NCERT level books.
The Lecture plan is as follows.
Lecture 1: [15:00 -- 16:30, 19 december 2020] Prime numbers.
(Number of primes, primes of the type
4n+3, 4n+1, inverse sum of primes etc.) (Amitava Bhattacharya, TIFR)
Lecture 2: [15:00-- 16:30, 2 Jan 2021] Chinese remainder theorem and related results.
(Amitava Bhattacharya, TIFR)
Lecture 3: [16 Jan 2021] Quadratic reciprocity theorem. (TBA)
Lecture 4: [30 Jan 2021] Special talk on Number Theory. (TBA)
