Counting local systems with principal local monodromy: I will report on joint work with Pierre Deligne on counting local systems on open curves over finite fields, with principal unipotent monodromy at infinity. This we achieve on translating via Lafforgue to counting automorphic representations, and further on using the trace formula on the suitable division algebra.
