From Chhatrapati Shivaji International or Domestic Airport

International airport terminal is located at Sahar, in the suburb East Andheri. It takes about 1 to 2 hours by road to reach TIFR (depending on traffic conditions).

Transport facilities from airports

Taxis are available from airports. Ola, Uber and Mumbai's famous "black and yellow" cab as well the blue colored "Cool cab" are available.

Prepaid taxis like Meru (022-4422-4422), Mega Cabs (022-4242-4242) etc can be availed of from counters just inside the arrival hall. Specify your destination as "Navy Nagar, Colaba".

You will be given the tariff and upon confirmation, will be given a receipt for your payment, which will also give the license number of the taxi as well as the mobile number of the driver. You have to board the taxi with the same license plate. You may have to show your receipt to the police at the exit to the airport. Retain the receipt.

Once you reach Navy Nagar, TIFR lies at the far end of Homi Bhabha Road, beyond the Navy Nagar bus terminus.

The approximate taxi fare from these airports (as of October 2021) are Rs. 600 - Rs. 800. They are subject to change.

From Railway stations

  • From Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST):

    TIFR is a 20-30 minute ride by taxi from CST. Taxis are available from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. You can also take a bus to TIFR. Bus routes 3, 6 Ltd, 136 come to Navy Nagar from outside the local station at CST. You should get off at the Navy Nagar bus terminus.

  • From Mumbai Central:

    From Mumbai Central Railway Station, TIFR is a 30-45 minute ride by taxi. Taxis are available outside the station. Alternatively, you can cross over to the local station and board a local for Churchgate station. You have to purchase a separate ticket for the local train. Taxis are available from outside Churchgate station. The bus route 137 also comes from Churchgate to the Navy Nagar terminus.

  • From Dadar (long distance railway station):

    Dadar Railway station is a large terminus. Long distance trains of both the Western and Central Railway halt at Dadar. From Dadar Railway Station, TIFR is approximately 1 hour ride by taxi. Taxis are available outside the station. You can also board a local train for both Churchgate and CST stations. You have to purchase a separate ticket for the local train. Taxis are available from outside Churchgate and CST station to TIFR. The bus route 137 and 3 also comes from Churchgate and CST stations respectively to the Navy Nagar terminus.

  • Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kurla:

    Another large railway terminus is the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus at Kurla. One can take a cab or a local train from this terminus to CST station. Please be warned, the local trains are extremely crowded at Kurla and it is not advisable to board local trains from Kurla with luggage.

  • Bandra Terminus:

    From Bandra Terminus, TIFR is about 1 hour 15 minute ride by taxi. Taxis are available outside the station. You can also board local trains for both Churchgate and CST stations. You have to purchase a separate ticket for the local train. Taxis are available from Churchgate and CST stations to TIFR. The bus route 137 and 3 also comes from Churchgate and CST stations respectively to the Navy Nagar terminus.
