The Springer Correspondence: Using the Jordan canonical form, the number of conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n \times n$ matrices can be seen to be equal to the number of irreducible representations of the permutation group $S_n$. In this talk, I will give an introduction to the Springer correspondence which provides a deeper geometric understanding of the above numerical coincidence.
