Derived (auto)equivalences and invariant theory: Invariant theory, which begins by studying functions on vector spaces with respect to finite symmetry groups, continues to be a key meeting point between algebra and geometry. I will give a brief invitation to this subject and its history. Then I will explain a modern point of view, which relates to my current work on autoequivalences of derived categories.
