Abstract: The absolute integral closure $(R^+)$ of a domain $R$ is the integral closure of $R$ in an algebraic closure of its fraction field. In spite of being non-noetherian, it has extensive applications in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra in positive and mixed characteristics. We answer a series of natural questions about $R^+$ in (equi)-characteristic zero. Astonishingly, our work suggests that $R^+$ is just as intimately tied to singularities and birational geometry even in this case.
